The year 2023 was a transitional year, moving from the high-demand environment of 2022 to a, hopefully, more stable market in 2024. During the peak times, an exceptionally tight and imbalanced container shipping market enabled the conventional reefer sector to attract a high volume of cargo at very appealing rates. As the container market relaxed, its freight rates declined sharply, as did the rates of conventional reefer ships.

Containers versus conventional reefers

The reefer shipping trade is served by two different modes of transport: the containership, sailing according to fixed liner serves, and the more tramp-oriented conventional reefership. Although the conventional reefership market has been shrinking for two decades and its market share is constantly reducing, 2023 saw a substantial order book for new conventional tonnage, offering a lifeline to this sector. Meanwhile, container carriers have become stiff competition. During busy times, their focus is largely on the main trades and conventional reefers manage to grab a part of the market. During times of reduced demand, containership operators move their smaller ships to the north-south, regional or local networks, traditionally dominated by conventional operators.
