The vehicle carrier market

There are many issues facing the vehicle carrier sector. Most recently, geopolitics and international trade policies, in particular tariffs, have been added to these. These, however, can be exceptionally complex, extensively covered and liable to change week-to-week if not day-to-day.

Dynamar’s new study on the vehicle carrier trades shows that sector is continually evolving. This is over and above the geopolitical and international trade challenges. The six largest carriers account for around three quarters of the fleet by capacity.

The Challengers

However, these majors are facing challenges from a range of newcomers, some established but expanding quickly, and some brand new. Many of those, such as BYD, SAIC Anji and China Merchants RoRo, have substantial financial and/or cargo backing, principally from Chinese vehicle and equipment manufacturers. These Challenger operators are making significant moves into the vehicle carrier trades that could ultimately threaten the previous hegemony of the ‘big 6’.

Underpinning this expansion of the Challengers, the Far East is now the largest exporter of rolling cargoes, replacing Europe and the Mediterranean. Again, this is due to the influence of Chinese manufacturers and looks unlikely to change outside of regulatory (i.e. tariff) response.

The content

These and other themes are explored in the study at both a sector and individual corporate level. The contents also include:

  • Full profiles of the twenty largest operators of vehicle carrying vessels
  • An analysis of trade volumes of rolling cargoes by direction, product groups and region
  • Overview of global vehicle manufacturing figures
  • A port of call analysis which highlights the most important vehicle ports in the world, who calls them and what trades they are connected to
  • How the vehicle carrier vessel concept came to be

All told, this latest study gives a valuable insight into the vehicle carrier market for all those with an interest in it. The study itself covers:

  • 215 pages (including extensive appendices)
  • 6 chapters + appendices
  • 170+ figures
  • 150+ tables
